Onvara is one of the chickenpox vaccines we use at The Baby Clinic in Waverley, Johannesburg. Here is what it protects against, how many doses are needed and what it costs.

What is chickenpox?

Chickenpox is a very contagious viral illness. It causes an itchy, blister-like rash and often a fever. Most children recover at home, but it can be miserable and sometimes causes complications.

What the vaccine does

The chickenpox vaccine helps protect your child against the illness. At The Baby Clinic it is an optional private vaccine, given in two doses. We use Onvara and Varilrix, depending on availability.

What it costs at our clinic

  • Chickenpox vaccine, per dose
    R715
  • Administration fee (including consultation)
    R470
  • Administration fee, vaccination only
    R350

Prices are in rand, were last confirmed in August 2026, exclude VAT unless stated, and may change.

Doses and timing

Two doses are given. The recommended timing is on our vaccination schedule, and your nurse will confirm the right timing for your child, including any catch-up plan.

Before your appointment

  • Tell the nurse about any current illness, allergies or health conditions.
  • Bring your child's Road to Health Book and earlier vaccination records.

Government vs private

This vaccine is not on the government schedule, so it is charged as a private vaccine. See how government and private fees compare.
